The head of the state oil giant Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) will now lead the COP28 climate talks in Dubai later this year. ADNOC is one of the largest oil companies in the world.
Environmentalists and climate activists were furious about the decision to appoint Sultan al-Jaber as COP28 president-designate. Groups are calling on al-Jaber to step down from his role as ADNOC CEO since it is a clear conflict of interest with his COP28 position.
“The UN Climate Summit is supposed to be a space where the world holds polluters to account, but increasingly [it’s] being hijacked by those with opposing interests. Protestors in the UK are blocking oil terminals despite hundreds of arrests, and celebrities like Jane Fonda have launched committees to fight political candidates funded by the fossil fuel industry.
