Stanford University’s Doerr School of Sustainability will take money from the fossil fuel industry through donations which will undermine the goals of the new school.
Stanford University recently announced they would be launching the Doerr School of Sustainability, which was kick-started thanks to a $1.1-billion donation by venture capitalists John and Ann Doerr.
Unfortunately, it seems that was not enough money to protect the integrity and independence of the new sustainability school from the fossil fuel industry. One of the industries that causes the most harm to our environment will be welcomes to gift money to the school, according to dean-elect Arun Majumdar.
Majumdar previously led the Stanford Precourt Institute for Energy, which has also accepted fossil fuel money, including a $20-million grant from Shell in 2019.
While it may be true that if the money is used for good, it doesn’t matter where it came from, the donation from the very industry they are fighting against will diminish the credibility and integrity of the school. In addition, it’s incredibly hard to guarantee that the donations won’t influence the actions of the school in any way.
Big oil has been lying to the American public for years. This industry should not be allowed to use its money to influence markets and the public! A recent three-part docuseries titled, The Power of Big Oil, reveals how the big oil companies are betraying the public and lying about climate change. The only thing that big oil cares about is money. They do not care to look at the facts and still adamantly deny that fossil fuels are horrible for the planet. With the latest IPCC report that says it’s ‘now or never ‘to take action against climate change, we need to act fast!
