At 17, Marielle Williamson discovered a cause worth fighting for. The Los Angeles high school student, who has never been a fan of cow’s milk, began to question the prominence of dairy products in her school’s food program. However, her attempt to promote non-dairy milk alternatives on campus resulted in an unexpected twist: a lawsuit against her school district and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), alleging a violation of her First Amendment rights.

Environmental concerns, health issues, and the rise of tasty alternatives like oat and nut milk have led many to rethink their milk habits. As it turns out, Gen Z is leading the way, consuming 20 percent less liquid milk than the national average. In 2021, plant-based milk purchases were made by 42 percent of American households, a significant shift in consumer preference.
Despite this, Marielle found herself in a battle with her school administrators. In their attempt to balance her requests against USDA policies, they asked her to also promote dairy milk at her non-dairy advocacy event. A legal battle began when she refused, citing her right to free speech.
The dairy industry has yet to take this generational shift lying down. Recently, it launched an ad campaign mocking plant-based milk. However, this has yet to deter Marielle or her peers. She was surprised by the positive feedback she received when she shared oat milk samples at school. Her friends, she discovered, were also eager for plant-based alternatives.
Schools are caught in a tough spot as the USDA guidelines require milk to be served with public school lunches. As a result, many schools opt to stick with dairy, despite a shift in student preferences.
As readers, we can Support this cause by choosing plant-based options, encouraging our local schools to offer alternatives, and raising our voices for nutritional justice. After all, every small step towards sustainability counts. Let’s take the lead from brave young people like Marielle and make our choices matter.
