From when the invasion began in February 2022 to June, 90 percent of wind power capacity and 30 percent of solar power capacity in the country were completely out of operation. The study from REN21 and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) also looked at the potential for Ukraine to redevelop solar and wind production to enable energy independence. Ukraine imports the majority of its fossil fuels, according to the International Energy Agency.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has been devastating for the environment, and Kyiv recently announced it will seek compensation in international courts. Russian missiles have hit their chemical plants, thermal power plants, and oil deposits which has severely affected the environment. The forests in the country are burning, and the Ukraine they once knew is being destroyed.
So many innocent lives have been lost, countless volunteers are helping to rescue animals all over the country, and many people are staying behind to help feed hundreds of refugees every day. The impact of the Russian invasion has been devastating for the environment and the global food supply and has even caused mass animal deaths like these dolphins in the Black Sea.
