The Biden administration has launched a program to bring solar to low-income houses nationwide, a move that will help communities lower their utility bills, Politico reported. This is just the latest move by the administration to reach their ambitious climate goals. The new project could lead to the development of 134 gigawatts of new solar power capacity nationwide.

The program would subsidize energy costs for low-income residents with developers of solar community projects. These sell subscriptions to households for renewable power, which significantly lowers electricity bills.

The administration believes this could give a whopping 134 gigawatts of new solar power nationwide. Currently, the United States’ solar capacity is at just 97.2 gigawatts, according to the Department of Energy (DOE), so this is a huge goal. The DOE estimates that the initial pilot project could save more than $1 billion on energy bills annually.

This program follows the announcement of a new pilot program in Delaware that will cover 70 percent of rooftop solar costs for moderate-income participants and cover 100 percent of solar costs for low-income families.

According to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, low-income households have a large energy burden, and the percentage of their income spent on energy is often three times higher than high-income households.

Households worldwide are struggling to pay their utility bills. Earlier this year, around 1.3 million New York households were reported to be two months behind on their bills, resulting in a debt of over 1.7 billion USD. This new project will help so many people and help the country continue the shift away from fossil fuels.
