While countries are still figuring out how to move away from their dependency on Russian oil amid the invasion of Ukraine, this Ukrainian woman has taken matters into her own hands.
This Ukrainian woman invented ‘solar for balconies’ to help wean Europe off Russian gas. WeDoSolar launched in February 2022, and so far, it has received “thousands of orders” for its “vertical solar power” panels. These panels are userfriendly and specifically designed to be mounted on balconies by non-tech-savvy users. The startup was founded by Ukrainian-born tech entrepreneur Karolina Attspodina and hardware engineer Qian Qin.
WeDoSolar says that their panels can reduce electricity bills by up to 25 percent and save up to 600kg CO2 per year. The EU imported 115 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Russia in 2021. This amounted to 40 percent of the EU’s total gas consumption.
The panels are lightweight and can plug into a standard power socket. The Microinverter pushes the power into the home grid. The company says this allows for appliances to be powered by the solar ahead of the normal grid. Through an app, customers can track the energy generation of the panels and the amount of CO2 that they saved.
In a statement, Attspodina said, “Solar energy is both free and readily available. Existing solar panel solutions are either intended for industrial use or are too heavy to install without the assistance of a qualified technical team. You also have to wait for the monthly bill to determine the effect. We provide a tool that every person, both owner and tenant, could use at home on a daily basis, to power home appliances.”
While the company is focused on EU markets, for the time being, this would be amazing to bring to people all over the world! Instead of typical cloth privacy screens like many have on their balconies, customers can generate green energy while having that same privacy!
