San Diego-based Aptera Motors has created a futuristic three-wheeled solar car that not only looks cool but costs less than $26k!

The company began taking orders for the futuristic car a year and a half ago, and it quickly sold out of multiple models. This resulted in a pushback delivery date for customers. However, in a webinar, the company announced that it purchased a factory to speed up the production of the cars.

Their new factory is a 200,000 square feet space in Carlsbad, California. Singularity Hub reported that the company is aiming to produce 10,000 cars by the end of this year before ramping up to 600,000 cars a year. The company has over 25,000 orders but believes their demand will go up as many will choose solar over gas or electric.

The solar car can travel up to 1,000 miles on a single charge and 40 miles of solar-powered driving per day. The unique shape might deter some customers, but the shape is what allows the car to slip through the air and use 30 percent less energy compared to other electric and hybrid vehicles. The car can go 0-60 MPH in just 3.5 seconds.

An interactive map on the company’s website lets customers see the “sun zone” where they live, and they can calculate how often they would need to plug the solar car into a charging station. The Aptera has a 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack that can be plugged in to charge like other electric vehicles.
