Fossil fuels are harming the environment, contributing to climate change and global warming. Despite the fossil fuel industry attempting to look good to the public, there has been a push for alternative, sustainable energy, like wind and solar.

One large breakthrough to combat fossil fuel usage was the release of electric vehicles. As electric vehicles become more widely accessible, people are opting to purchase them instead of cars that run on fossil fuels.

One downside to electric vehicles, however, is the need to charge them regularly. It’s time-consuming and uses energy, but there may be a solution coming to the market: Solar-powered electric vehicles.

Three different companies, Aptera, Sono Motors, and Lightyear, are launching solar-powered cars and they’re now available for presale.

Sono Motors has its Sion available for pre-order and it’s expected to ship the first batches of solar-powered cars in 2023. The Sion costs €28,500 and is described as “A spacious electric car with a range of up to 305 kilometers that charges itself through the power of the sun.”

The Lightyear One is also in the works and boasts that “you can drive for months without charging,” thanks to the use of solar panels. You can reserve a Lightyear One, which is expected to be delivered in the summer of 2022.

Aptera is also releasing a solar-powered car that is open for reservations. It’s expected to go into production toward the end of 2022. They expect drivers to get up to 40 miles per day of solar-powered driving, and only need a charge every ~1,000 miles.
