“Octonauts: Above and Beyond” is a recent spinoff of a longtime-running BBC show and is one of the first shows for young children that addresses climate change. While this is quite a difficult task, the program has managed to create a balance between educating young children about the changing world while also not frightening them. Although some television shows for preschoolers have discussed Climate change, it is rarely more than one episode, and it is very surface level.
Octonauts follows heroes that travel the world to rescue animals that are threatened by rising seas. A macaque hydrologist character brings water to a herd of elephants on the Namibian coast during a worsening drought. A dog scientist researches the thawing permafrost of Siberia.
Unfortunately, these children watching these shows are carrying a huge climate burden. They are feeling the effects of the worsening Global warming, and they will be the ones coming up with solutions. Global warming will never be something that these kids don’t have to worry about.
The show demonstrates to children how Climate change can and will affect their own lives. In a piece by The New York Times, they cite an episode where the Octonauts experience a shortage of their favorite beverage, hot cocoa. They ran out because the heat is making the cocoa plants wither. The crew then sings, “Changing climate makes the temperature high, and in the heat the trees are thirsty and dry.”
The show is available on Netflix in 19 languages and 190 countries. To watch, check out Netflix.
