New Study Emphasizes the Importance of ‘Rewilding’ Cities to Fight Climate Change

The study conducted by the international Conservation charity Zoological Society of London (ZSL) found that restoring biodiversity can help wildlife and help cities fight heatwaves, forest fires, and flooding.

Rewilding consists of restoring nature and biodiversity in an area. This lets nature take back the land and revives wildlife in the process. Rewilding can be less management in parks and other areas, as well as people not using artificial lawns and pesticides.

The Global Rewilding Alliance, an organization dedicated to rewilding and restoring ecosystems, has said that wild animals could be the answer to our problems. Bringing back more wild animals and diversity into ecosystems can slow the warming climate and help control Climate change.

“Wildfires, floods and heatwaves across the world have brought the climate crisis to the fore for many people this year,” said Dr. Nathalie Pettorelli, lead author and climate and biodiversity expert at ZSL.

“The interconnection of the climate crisis with the loss of nature is thankfully now widely recognized and rewilding is an approach being increasingly embraced.”

To fight Climate change, we need to restore these ecosystems. Many don’t realize how important wild animals and ecosystems are for the environment, but they are a necessary step in fighting the worst effects of Climate change.

“There’s so much that the everyday person can do to Support a positive change,” Dr. Pettorelli said. “For example, by leaving part of your garden wild, and avoiding artificial turf and pesticides we can all do our bit to secure a future where wildlife and people thrive.”

Most of the land on earth is occupied by livestock grown for meat consumption. This has led to an amount of livestock that is not good for the warming planet and healthy ecosystems need a wide range of different animal species and plant species. Eating a plant-based diet can help slow Climate change and save countless animals!

It’s estimated that if the North American boreal forests contained a good amount of wolves, moose, and trees, they could swallow up nearly 10 percent of the US carbon emissions. It’s important to remember that ocean animals matter just as much in this too. When whales eat prey in deep water, they release nutrients to the surface, which promotes phytoplankton which also draws carbon dioxide down.
