The poor dog was found in Hubbard Township with her eats cut off and an open sore on her butt that was filled with flies and larvae, according to The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project’s Facebook.

“She is now safe and sound at The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project…If this is your dog, then shame on you and it’ll be over my dead body before she ever goes back to you…” the organization wrote in a post.

The dog, who they named Penny, was taken to see veterinarians, who found that she had two small tumors that will need to be removed. Her ears are completely gone, and she will need to wear ear muffs on occasion to protect her ear canals. Her top lip is degloved, and her tongue is almost completely gone due to trauma. Her teeth are also either completely worn down or gone. This means she will need to be hand-fed and given water through a syringe for the foreseeable future. The poor abused dog can’t even pant, so she will need to avoid high temperatures.

“I don’t know who had Penny, nor can I say for certain how she came to be in this condition…what I can say is that she has been severely neglected and her “owner” needs to be held accountable,” said the non-profit.

“She was found wandering on Lincoln Ave. in Hubbard, OH (bordering Youngstown), so I suspect that she’s from that area…if you know who her “owner” was, please contact your local police department, Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County – Humane Department or The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project so that no more dogs suffer the same fate as Penny”

A reward of $1,000 is being offered for any information that leads to an arrest and conviction of those responsible.

In an update from the organization, they say Penny is on the road to recovery and even took her very first hike, where she was able to take in sights, sounds, and smells that she likely never experienced before.

Animal abuse is more prevalent than many may think. According to PetPedia, every 60 seconds, an animal suffers from abuse, with more than 65% being dogs. More than 10 million animals die from abuse every year in the US alone, not including the livestock bred for consumption who also suffer immense abuse. Animal abuse happens everywhere and is a serious issue. We need more laws to protect animals and hold abusers accountable.
