An Animal rights nonprofit is suing YouTube over allowing videos of animal abuse to stay on the social media site.

The nonprofit filed the lawsuit on the grounds of YouTube not holding to its policy, which clearly explains what content is considered to be animal abuse. It is Youtube’s responsibility to remove these offending videos of animal abuse, but they have failed to do so on several accounts.

Many of these videos showed animals clearly being tormented, abused, harmed, and terrified. The videos were also accompanied by high-standing ads, which generate revenue not only for the account posting the video, but also for YouTube itself.

One lawyer on the case said, “YouTube is aware of these videos and its role in distributing them, as well as its continuing Support of their creation, production, and circulation. It is unfortunate that YouTube has chosen to put profits over principles of ethical and humane treatment of innocent animals.”

YouTube has often managed to skirt these issues by claiming that some of these videos slip through the cracks and others depict harm that is allowed, such as medical videos, slaughtering videos, and hunting videos. The company claimed that they are trying to reduce these kinds of videos, but according to activists, there is still no real proof that they take the issue seriously.
