Photographer Dmitry Kokh recently wrote an essay on the unique and captivating photographs that he managed to take of polar bears in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug of the Russian Federation.

Kokh discovered the polar bears living in an abandoned weather station in the Kolyuchin. The photographer saw his opportunity and decided to capture photographs of this unusual scene. He mostly used drones in order to not disturb the bears in their new habitat.
The bears can be seen sticking their heads out of building windows and walking amongst them, living on the abandoned island just like the people did before them.
The striking images showcase just how beautiful and intelligent these creatures are.

Not only is this an incredibly rare situation, it’s also unique to find so many polar bears in this area. At one point, 20 bears could be seen on the island, with more potentially hiding out in buildings.
It is an incredible sight that will hopefully bring more attention to the plight of these magnificent creatures. Like so many others, they are in danger of disappearing altogether because of climate change.
