Some A-list celebrities in and around the city of Calabasas in Los Angeles County have been using more water than allowed amid the California drought.

Houses in and around Calabasas are all on a water budget, but a CBS Los Angeles investigation found that many belonging to celebrities have been going over their allotted amount.

A drought emergency went into effect last December in the Las Virgenes Water District, and since, people have been asked to conserve water. Watering is only allowed once a week, and everyone has a strict water budget. Anyone that is found to pass this budget could acquire a fine.

While many locals are following the rules that have led to brown grass, others are not following the rules. According to water district, public records obtained by CBS L.A., some celebrities in the area are not following the rules that everyone is supposed to follow.

They found that Kourtney Kardashian, who lives in Calabasas in an $8 million home, used 245 percent of its allotted water budget in May. This made it the fourth month that they went over budget.

Sylvester Stallone, who lives in an $18 million mansion near Calabasas, has gone over his budget for at least four months and used 351 percent of its budget in May.

Howie Mandel used 241 percent of the water budget in May, which was also the fourth month over. The Game has also gone over budget for at least four months.

Joe McDermott, with the Las Virgenes Water District, told CBS that anyone who goes over 200 percent of their budget for at least two months pays a fine. However, a cash fine doesn’t necessarily work for these residents.

“For those customers who are very affluent and have lots of … cash, financial penalties don’t necessarily work,” McDermott said. “We don’t think you can just buy your way out of the drought. Everyone needs to do their part. This is very serious.”

So the district created a plan. They will place small disks in the pipe at the water meter to cut the flow of water, forcing people to conserve. Kevin Hart, as well as Nas’s home, have gotten flow restrictors placed. Celebrities have reportedly asked to have the restrictor removed and want to pay their way out of it. Flow restrictors are reserved for the worst offenders.

Wake Up and Smell the Climate Change T-Shirt by Tiny Rescue: Climate Collection

Everyone needs to do their part to conserve water. At this point, it is no secret that droughts and other situations like this are caused by the planet’s rapid warming and climate change. Climate change leads to extreme weather like droughts, floods, and fires. The single BEST thing you can do to save water is to stop eating meat and all animal products. Growing animals for livestock takes a massive amount of water. It takes nearly 660 gallons of water to just make one burger, which is equivalent to nearly two months of showering for the average person. On the other hand, it takes 1,000 gallons of water to make just one gallon of cow milk.

Studies have shown that eating more plant-based can add over a decade to your lifespan, it can save the world’s forests, it benefits the environment, and it is significantly better for your health! Nations around the world have urged people to eat more plant-based to curb climate change.
