Could the Biden Administration and Senator Joe Machin be close to reaching an agreement on Biden’s Build Back Better bill? The Washington Post has provided inside information from two anonymous sources that confirm the senator has restarted negotiations.

In December of last year, Manchin derailed Biden’s Build Back Better bill when he declined to back the legislation. “When you have these things coming at you the way they are right now, I’ve always said this; if I can’t go home and explain it to the people of West Virginia, I can’t vote for it,” he told Fox News Sunday. The West Virginia senator further cited concerns over the economic consequences of the 2 trillion bill, including inflation, debts, and Covid.

In January, Manchin had stated that no discussions were taking place to revive the bill. But according to the Washington Post’s sources, debates regarding the bill are currently progressing. Biden’s climate and social spending bill includes measures for clean energy tax credits and investments in the communities’ resistance to climate change but also proposes financial Support for healthcare, education, childcare, and immigration programs.

At the moment, however, the sources only confirmed the senator had addressed a fraction of these measures. Manchin is said to have discussed the possibility of billions of dollars being allocated towards addressing Climate change, tax codes, and prescription drugs. The senator has also said that “the legislation must be voted on before senators leave town in August.”

Manchin does call for some concessions, the sources inform us, and wishes the Biden Administration would reevaluate its position on gas and oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and the natural gas exports. The current Five-Year Program for Offshore Oil and Gas Leasing Program is due to expire on June 30^th, and supporters of the drilling operations are expressing frustration at the delays in the drafting of a new plan.

While negations may have started up again, relations between Manchin and the White House have not been optimal. With Manchin’s refusal to back Biden’s bill in December, Biden’s relationship with the senator has been said to have reached a low point. Since then, Manchin has also spoken out against Biden’s plan to fund a charging point network for electric cars. Nevertheless, the Biden Administration is keen to find a way to secure Manchin’s pivotal vote and come to an agreement.
