Gary Tickner has described the situation as “living a nightmare,” after his beloved dog got caught in a coyote trap on one of their hiking trips.
Tickner has 10 Great Pyrenees sheepdogs that he often hikes with. Olaf, his 5-year-old Great Pyrenees, recently stepped into a leghold trap during one of these hikes.
The coyote trap had been placed just off of the hiking trail. Olaf had wandered over the top of it as he sniffed at a discarded muffin wrapper.
The trap snapped onto the dog’s leg, and he let out a cry that instantly turned on the rest of the dog’s natural instincts. Tickner sustained several serious injuries as he tried to protect and free Olaf from the trap as the other dogs instinctively began to attack the trapped dog.
Tickner sustained several dog bites to his leg and calf that later required surgery. Olaf was eventually freed and was treated at a vet for his injuries.
Tickner has now made it his mission to warn other dog owners about the risks of coyote traps, as several other traps were found nearby the one Olaf had stepped in.
In the US, Coyotes are often considered to be pests that can be killed, hunted, and trapped without restrictions. Not only is this inhumane, but these traps also pose a huge risk to domestic animals such as cats and dogs.
These kinds of traps are incredibly cruel and inhumane, trapping the creature and often fatally injuring them in the process. If the traps are not checked right away, the animal can also be left to slowly die of starvation, thirst, or blood loss.
