When young people direct their creativity toward solving the most pressing problems facing our planet, extraordinary things happen. That truth has never been more beautifully illustrated than by three 16-year-olds from India who just made history on a global stage.

Avyana Mehta, Ariana Agarwal, and Vivaan Chhawchharia became the first Indian team ever to win The Earth Prize, the world’s largest environmental competition for teenagers. They were named Global Winners at the awards ceremony in Geneva on May 29th, selected through a public vote of more than 23,000 people from a field of seven regional finalists. Their victory is a testament to both their ingenuity and the urgency of the problem they set out to solve.

The trio created something called Plas-Stick, a sustainable biodegradable powder derived from waste tamarind seeds. When introduced to water, it binds microplastic particles together into visible clumps that can simply be lifted out using a handheld magnet. No electricity required. No complicated infrastructure needed. Just an elegant, accessible solution built with some of the most vulnerable communities on Earth in mind.

That last point matters enormously. According to the WHO and UNICEF, approximately 2.1 billion people around the world still lack access to safely managed drinking water. Existing filtration technologies are often expensive, energy dependent, or simply out of reach for rural and low income populations. Plas-Stick was designed to fill exactly that gap.

Developed in partnership with researchers at IIT Guwahati, the invention has already been introduced to more than 8,000 students and educators. The team has set an ambitious goal of reaching between 35,000 and 40,000 people before the end of 2026. The ripple effect of that kind of grassroots education and awareness could be profound.

These three young innovators remind us that solutions to our biggest climate and water health crises can come from anywhere and anyone willing to ask the right questions.
