When a company brands itself as a climate leader while quietly shelving the very projects meant to back that claim, the planet pays the price. That is exactly what a bombshell cache of internal documents now suggests about BHP, the world’s largest mining company, and the revelations could not come at a more critical moment for global decarbonisation efforts.
According to The Guardian, confidential records leaked to journalists show BHP has quietly paused or abandoned a series of renewable energy projects tied to its iron ore operations in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. Among the shelved initiatives is a 50-megawatt solar farm that had already received board approval and funding, a nearly 500-megawatt solar, wind and battery ecosystem capable of powering an entire small city, and an iron ore processing facility that could have eliminated 1.7 million tonnes of emissions annually — the equivalent of removing over 350,000 cars from the road.
Even more troubling is what the documents reveal about BHP’s internal awareness. The company’s own records acknowledge that dragging its feet on decarbonisation poses a serious reputational risk and that acting urgently on climate was central to its licence to operate. Yet a memo from May 2025 describes the current decarbonisation plan as having a “low probability of success” and floats options to delay electrifying its diesel truck and rail fleets until 2035 or 2040, or to take no action at all.
Meanwhile, the company continues purchasing diesel trucks worth hundreds of millions of dollars for long-term use, directly contradicting earlier commitments to begin transitioning to electric fleets by 2027. Analysts warn that BHP’s choices are not just a corporate failing but a national one, with experts arguing the mining giant’s emissions trajectory threatens Australia’s legally binding climate targets.
What makes this story so important for conscious consumers and advocates is the reminder that corporate sustainability pledges demand public accountability. Supporting transparent campaigns that push corporations to honour their commitments, and choosing to spend with companies that are genuinely walking their talk, remains one of the most powerful tools we have. Change starts with awareness, and now we have it.
