The Daily Mail asked a professional chocolatier if she could tell the difference between milk chocolate candies and the vegan options. The answer may surprise you.
Chocolatier and UK World Chocolate Master Ruth Hinks tested vegan versions of chocolate in advance of KitKat’s announcement of a vegan version.

“I’m intrigued,” Hinks shared of the challenge. “It’s relatively easy to produce a vegan version of a dark chocolate which traditionally contains no milk. But producing a vegan milk chocolate is a different ball game. You are looking for a lovely creaminess but no overpowering flavour. It’s the holy grail and companies are experimenting with soya, rice and coconut which all have slightly different textures and flavours from milk.”

In tasting ten chocolates, Hinks chose vegan five times, traditional four times, and rounded out the competition with a single tie. She tried options from Lindt, Mars, Nestle, and Nomo.

The verdict is in! Vegan chocolate can stand up to traditional options. The announcement of the KitKatV follows the introduction of Vegan Topic and Bounty Bars from another candy producer, Mars.
