When we start eating more plant-based foods, veggie burgers are usually one of the first things we try. The countless premade options available today in the frozen foods aisle makes it easy for practically anyone to find the veggie burger of their dreams, but also nothing tastes quite as good as something you’ve made yourself. One of the best-known tricks to add bulk to your veggie burgers is to add bread crumbs, which also doubles as a binder to help keep everything together. If you avoid gluten, then there are gluten-free bread crumbs available in most grocery stores or you can make your own with dry gluten-free bread, but what if you’re grain-free?

Luckily, it’s not that hard! Even though bread crumbs are a popular binder in many veggie burger recipes, we can swap those out for flax meal or chia seeds. And while grains are a popular ingredient in many veggie burgers, we can make hearty burgers with beans, lentils, and quinoa (which is technically a seed in spite of being dubbed an “ancient grain”). When it comes to serving burgers, we can add them to salads or if you want something that travels well, wrap them up in grain-free tortillas like this 4-Ingredient Cumin Flatbread made from almond and tapioca flours, these Beet Tortillas made from grated beets and almond flour, or these Flourless Lentil Carrot Tortillas made from lentils, grated carrot, and almond meal. Luckily, most fries are gluten-free and grain-free, so you don’t need any special tips or tricks for that.
