The Senate Just Passed the Coronavirus Relief Bill Which Allows for Free COVID-19 Testing and Paid Leave

Mitch Mcconnell

The Senate passed the House’s COVID-19 Relief Bill on March 18 and President Trump is expected to sign it.

The bill includes free testing for COVID-19 and paid emergency leave. The bill is one of several expected relief bills targeting those hit hardest by the spreading coronavirus. Senate Leader Mitch McConnell noted that senators should take note of CDC recommended social distancing and vote one at a time and avoid congregating in groups where possible while in chambers.

In the bill, workers are provided with two weeks of paid sick leave if they are being treated or tested for the virus, or have been diagnosed. Workers who were told to stay home by government officials or doctors are also eligible for the paid time.

McConnell said ahead of voting, “This is a time for urgent bipartisan action, and in this case, I do not believe we should let perfection be the enemy of something that will help even a subset of workers.” The bill passed 90-8.

According to the New York Times, this is one of the multiple bills planned by Congress to help provide economic relief to those affected by the virus.
