Russia is Burning $10 Million Worth of Natural Gas Every Day

Flaring coming from natural gas plant

Russia is burning off an estimated $10 million worth of natural gas a day near its shared border with Finland, according to analysts. Despite energy prices skyrocketing in Europe, Russia continues to burn off large amounts of natural gas that would previously have been exported to Germany.

According to an analysis of heat levels and satellite data from Rystad Energy and obtained by BBC News, gas giant Gazprom is burning about 4.34 million cubic meters of gas every single day at a new liquified natural gas (LNG) facility.

According to a German ambassador, they are burning it because “they couldn’t sell it elsewhere”. However, the large amounts of carbon dioxide that this is emitting is a huge concern.

The LNG facility is located near the start of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which carries gas under the sea to Germany. However, less gas has been running through the pipeline since July, with Russians blaming it on technical issues. Germany, on the other hand, says that it is a political move following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Although plants often burn off the gas for safety or technical reasons, the plant has been flared up since June.

“I’ve never seen an LNG plant flare so much,” Dr. Jessica McCarty, an expert on satellite data from Miami University in Ohio told BBC News.

“Starting around June, we saw this huge peak, and it just didn’t go away. It’s stayed very anomalously high.”

The burning is extremely worrisome and will have a devastating impact on the environment. Scientists are also worried because the flaring is at Arctic latitudes, and the ‘black carbon’ will eventually make its way north, where it will speed up the melting of ice.

The time has finally come, and big oil is going down. A new PBS Docuseries Reveals How Big Oil Has Been Lying to The Public About Climate Change For Years. It’s finally time to take down the oil and gas industry; the jig is up. Our addiction to fossil fuels has created the climate crisis, and now it’s threatening our forests too. These companies have been exposed for lying, buying ads on Google

While we need to cut off our dependence on fossil fuels as quickly as possible, we also must remember another major industry that is causing harm to the environment; the meat and dairy industry. A study even found that meat and dairy companies are responsible for more harm to the environment than fossil fuels. The public has had enough. Protestors in the UK are blocking oil terminals despite hundreds of arrests, and celebrities like Jane Fonda have launched committees to fight political candidates funded by the fossil fuel industry.
