California Shelters Are Opening Their Doors and Waiving Fees This June

Every year, millions of loving animals wait in shelters, hoping someone will walk through the door and choose them. On June 6, thousands of those animals across California will get exactly that chance, as participating shelters statewide waive adoption fees for the third annual Adopt-a-Pet Day.

The event is no small undertaking. Organized through a collaboration between CalAnimals, the San Francisco SPCA, and the ASPCA, the initiative has grown dramatically since its launch. According to CalAnimals, 3,609 animals found homes on a single day in 2024. By 2025, that number had surged to nearly 5,000 in one day alone. The momentum is undeniable, and the 2026 event promises to build on that incredible foundation.

Shelter overcrowding is a serious and ongoing challenge, and events like this create a meaningful ripple effect for pets throughout the state. When one animal is adopted, space opens up for another in need. Communities become safer, shelters become less strained, and families gain a devoted companion who might otherwise never know a loving home.

What makes this particular campaign even more compelling is how much value comes bundled with each adoption. New pet parents will not be leaving empty handed. Each adoption includes spay and neuter services, up to date vaccinations, microchipping, a free veterinary exam at participating clinics, and post-adoption training Support. That kind of comprehensive care makes the transition easier for both the animal and the family welcoming them in.

If you have ever considered bringing a furry companion into your life, June 6 is the moment to act. Visit your local participating shelter, open your heart, and give a deserving animal the fresh start they have been waiting for. Change a life, and let them change yours.
