A rabies vaccine recall is raising fresh concern for pets across the United States. According to Moná Thomas at People, a small number of rabies vaccine vials were found to contain sterile water instead of vaccine.

That matters because rabies prevention is not optional in most states. The virus is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. It can also spread from animals to humans, so routine vaccination protects whole communities.

The manufacturer, Boehringer Ingelheim, says it launched a voluntary recall after identifying the issue. The affected product is IMRAB 3TF, 1 mL, Serial 18665, with an expiration date of March 12, 2027. Officials say clinics that received doses from that serial have been notified. Many vets are already contacting clients.

If your pet got a rabies shot after September 29, 2025, it is worth checking the certificate now. If the serial matches, call your veterinarian right away. Revaccination is recommended to avoid gaps in protection and stay compliant with local rules.

The company says the impacted batch represents about 2.5% of IMRAB doses sold in 2025. Even so, the recall can still create stress and extra appointments for families. It can also strain clinics that are already busy.

This is also a reminder that public health depends on prevention, not panic. When we keep vaccination up to date, we reduce risk for neighbors, shelters, and local wildlife too. And when we Support safer food systems, including more plant based meals, we help lower pressure on the environment that drives disease spillover in the first place.

If you are unsure, ask your vet and share recall info with friends. Small actions protect lives.
