Can Pets Be Tax Dependents Under a Fairer System?

Tax season makes people look for relief. Sometimes the ideas get wild. Now a New York dog owner is testing a question many of us feel. If pets are family, why can’t they count as dependents?

According to Michelle Singletary at The Washington Post, Amanda Reynolds is suing the IRS. She wants her eight year old golden retriever, Finnegan Mary Reynolds, treated as a dependent. She says she covers housing, food, veterinary care, training, daycare, and boarding. She says it costs over $5,000 a year. A federal magistrate judge did not dismiss the case outright. Still, he signaled it will probably fail under current law.

The IRS rules are blunt. A dependent has to be a person with a qualifying relationship. So even when our pets Support our health, the tax code still treats them as property.

Still, the case matters for another reason. It taps into a wider frustration with a system that often feels tilted toward the ultra wealthy. Meanwhile, ordinary workers lost the home office deduction years ago. Most people cannot afford a long legal fight over taxes.

That gap shows up in daily life and in the environment. When families get squeezed, preventive vet visits get delayed, shelters get crowded, and wildlife faces more pressure. We should not accept rules that ignore care work, whether it is for kids, elders, or animals.

A fair tax code would not solve everything, but it could help. We can invest in services that keep communities resilient. We can also back programs that Support responsible pet care. And we can cut costs and emissions by choosing more plant based meals. Vegan options can reduce demand for industrial animal farming and protect the planet.
