A recent European court ruling allows airlines to classify pets as “luggage,” meaning that if a beloved companion animal goes missing during a flight, carriers only owe the same compensation they’d offer for a misplaced suitcase. For anyone who has ever lived with an animal, this is unthinkable. Pets are living beings with emotional bonds—not objects on a baggage belt.
This ruling follows the heartbreaking case of Mona, a dog who escaped her flight crate and was never recovered. Her family received no meaningful recognition of their loss, despite the obvious difference between losing a companion animal and losing a jacket. Europe urgently needs a third, formal category for travelling animals—distinct from passengers and cargo—to protect pets and properly hold airlines accountable.
