When someone is sleeping rough, a dog or cat is not a nice extra. It can be safety, companionship, and a reason to keep going. Yet many people experiencing homelessness still get turned away from accommodation because they will not abandon their pets.

That is why Street Paws has launched the No One Left Outside campaign, calling for clearer pet inclusive housing policies so people are not forced to choose between shelter and the animal they love. According to Street Paws, social landlords should not unreasonably refuse pets when a simple risk assessment shows it is safe to do so. Campaigners say a similar principle already exists in parts of the private rented sector, so the barrier is often policy and practice, not money.

Actors and animal advocates Ricky Gervais and Peter Egan have backed the push, pointing to how deeply bonded people can be with the animals who stay by them through crisis. Street Paws says exclusionary rules keep people on the streets longer, which also harms health and makes it harder for Support services to reach them.

This issue also connects to the wider environment. Stable housing lowers emergency service pressure and helps communities plan for extreme weather and rising costs. In other words, humane housing policy is part of a healthier planet, especially when it protects the most vulnerable.

If you want to Support pet inclusive housing in the UK (and you’re based in the UK), you can add your name to the petition here. Also, consider how a more plant based way of living can reduce harm, and keep pushing for compassion for people and animals.
