Greta Thunberg Sues Native Sweden over Insufficient Climate Action

Greta Thunberg is suing her native Sweden over failing to act on the climate crisis. Thunberg marched with over 600 young people to the Swedish capital to a court Friday to file a lawsuit against the country for insufficient climate action.

Over 600 people under the age of 26 signed the 87-page document that will be the basis for the lawsuit. The lawsuit was filed in the Stockholm District Court and will now determine if the country has violated its citizen’s rights with climate policies.

“Sweden has never treated the climate crisis like a crisis,” said Anton Foley, spokesman of the youth-led initiative Aurora, which prepared and filed the lawsuit. “Sweden is failing in its responsibility and breaking the law.”

Thunberg first came into the public’s eye when she was just 15 and started the famous school strike in Sweden. In 2018, Thunberg and others would sit in front of the Swedish parliament every schoolday for three weeks, protesting the government’s inaction on Climate change. The Fridays for Future movement soon went viral and inspired many other young activists. Just last week, protests were held worldwide called by the Fridays for Future movement.

Since then, she has gone on to work with many leaders and has become one of the biggest names in climate activism. She was even the youngest Time Person of the Year in 2019 and has been nominated three times for a Nobel peace prize.
