According to a report from ABC7NY, police are investigating the sudden death of a 15-year-old carriage horse named Lady, who collapsed while still attached to her carriage in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen. Lady had only been working as a carriage horse since June and, according to her driver, had passed a veterinary exam before starting her duties. Despite these assurances, her death reignites long-standing concerns about the safety and ethics of forcing horses to pull carriages in one of the busiest cities in the world.

This is not the first time New York has faced outrage over carriage horse deaths. In 2022, another horse, Ryder, collapsed in Midtown, sparking massive protests and calls for reform. That tragedy led to proposed legislation known as Ryder’s Law, which aims to ban horse-drawn carriages and replace them with humane, electric alternatives. Groups like NYCLASS argue that Lady’s death highlights systemic failures in protecting these animals, calling the current laws ineffective as horses continue to collapse and die in city streets.

While carriage industry representatives often insist the animals are well cared for, the reality of forcing horses into traffic, heat, and Pollution paints a different picture. Horses are prey animals, easily spooked, and not naturally suited to the chaos of modern urban environments. Even with temperature rules in place—such as requiring horses to be pulled from service in extreme heat or cold—many activists believe the system cannot guarantee their safety.

For a city that claims to lead on compassion and progress, the continued use of carriage horses feels outdated and cruel. It’s time to honor Lady and Ryder not with excuses, but with action. Supporting legislation to end horse-drawn carriages is one way we can prevent more unnecessary suffering. Let’s push New York to embrace cruelty-free alternatives and finally give these animals the dignity they deserve.
