A disturbing case of animal cruelty has emerged from San Joaquin County, California, where dozens of dead horses were discovered across multiple rural properties. According to KTVU, authorities found at least 80 deceased animals and many more in desperate need of care.

The investigation, which began last August, culminated in the arrest of Clements residents Jan Johnson and Justine Fitzhenry. Johnson faces over 20 felony counts of animal cruelty, including cockfighting-related charges and firearm violations. Fitzhenry is charged with several counts of cruelty and neglect.

Deputies first found 27 horse carcasses and numerous starving horses on Johnson’s property in January. Days later, they uncovered an additional 53 dead horses on other land she controlled—along with a dead dog and cow. In total, 90 horses were found alive but severely malnourished. Many were too sick to recover and had to be euthanized. Only 16 horses were stable enough to be rescued, now under the care of Oakdale Equine Rescue.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office also reported the discovery of a cockfighting ring linked to Johnson, further highlighting the scale of the abuse. Sheriff Patrick Withrow emphasized that authorities took time to ensure every animal was accounted for in the case. “Every single one of these animals that were tortured deserved our respect and our passion in investigating this,” he stated.

Animal cruelty on this scale is more than just a legal matter—it reflects a deep disregard for life. We urge our readers to Support legitimate animal sanctuaries and push for stronger protections for farmed and companion animals alike. No animal should suffer silently behind closed doors.
