President Trump has issued a sweeping executive order aimed at weakening state-level environmental protections, according to Hayley Smith at the Los Angeles Times. The order directs Attorney General Pam Bondi to stop enforcement of state climate initiatives, specifically taking aim at California’s cap-and-trade program, which limits greenhouse gas emissions and allows companies to trade unused credits.
The executive order criticizes climate-focused policies as “burdensome” and claims they threaten “American energy dominance.” It targets laws from states like New York and Vermont, accusing them of unfairly penalizing fossil fuel companies. California’s laws on tailpipe emissions, electric vehicle promotion, and its Polluters Pay Climate Superfund Act could all be impacted.
Environmental advocates warn that blocking these laws could create immunity for fossil-fuel companies, shielding them from responsibility for climate damage. Cassidy DiPaola from Make Polluters Pay said the move “weaponizes the Justice Department against states like California” trying to hold polluters accountable.
The executive order is part of a broader rollback of environmental regulations under Trump, including efforts to expand coal production and dismantle clean energy projects. California Governor Gavin Newsom dismissed the order as a “glorified press release,” vowing that California’s clean energy progress — like increasing battery storage by 1,600% since 2019 — will continue despite federal opposition.
As this legal battle unfolds, it’s clear that the fight for a livable planet needs all of us. If you believe in clean air, safe water, and a future free from fossil-fuel domination, now’s the time to act. Support local and national environmental groups, choose plant-based meals, and vote for leaders committed to a sustainable, compassionate world.
