It’s not every day a Hollywood movie sparks a personal transformation—let alone one that kicks off a decades-long vegan advocacy journey. But that’s exactly what happened to actor James Cromwell while filming the 1995 classic Babe. According to The Guardian’s recent interview with Cromwell, the moment came on his second day on set. He stepped away for lunch, only to discover the animals he had just been filming with—now cooked and served up on plates. “Fricasseed, roasted and seared,” he recalled. That’s when he decided he’d never eat animals again.
Cromwell, who played the gentle farmer Hoggett, became a global symbol of kindness toward animals. But behind the scenes, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. From fighting to keep his sideburns to battling accent decisions, Cromwell’s commitment to the role was intense. Meanwhile, the film’s special effects team spent gruelling days creating ultra-realistic animatronics, often enduring extreme heat inside silicone-clad puppets. Special effects artist Neal Scanlan said they had only one prosthetic head for Babe, and every hair was punched in by hand.
The realism paid off—not just in box office success, but in cultural impact. The film inspired many to rethink their food choices. One woman even told Cromwell it “ruined” her relationship with her daughter, who stopped eating meat after watching the film. Cromwell’s reply? If that’s what your relationship was built on, “it sucks anyway.”
The magic of Babe isn’t just in its storytelling or puppetry. It’s in how it quietly reshaped the way a generation views animals—not as food, but as friends.
Let Babe be your reminder to go meat-free, eat plant-based. Watch the film, reflect, and consider making the compassionate switch—your plate (and conscience) will thank you.
