Bodega shops, corner stores that are a staple in New York City, have long been home to resident cats. These cats not only charm customers but also serve an important role in keeping the stores free of rodents. However, despite their value, bodega cats are not officially recognized under NYC law.
Currently, they exist in a “legal gray area,” as they’re neither fully permitted nor fully banned, creating uncertainty about their future. A new bill by City Councilmember Keith Powers seeks to change that by legalizing bodega cats, provided they are vaccinated, neutered, and the shop meets health inspection standards. This would give these hardworking cats the legal protection they deserve.
Sign the petition now to Support the legalization of bodega cats and urge the New York City Council to pass this vital bill.
