Dark chocolate should be a treat, not a health risk. But recent tests by George Washington University found nearly half of dark chocolate bars sold by big names like Amazon and Whole Foods contain dangerous levels of lead. Even worse, over a third contained cadmium, a metal known to cause cancer. These toxins can damage children’s brains and nervous systems, even in small doses.
Shockingly, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) still hasn’t set binding limits on these harmful metals in most food. That means chocolate companies can keep selling products with unsafe contamination—and we’re the ones paying the price.
If the FDA sets strict limits, companies will be forced to clean up their supply chains, making chocolate safer in the U.S. and beyond.
