Victor Perez, a 17-year-old boy with autism and cerebral palsy, was shot nine times by police just seconds after they arrived outside his home in Idaho. He is now in critical condition, in a coma, and has already lost one leg. His family says he is nonverbal, barely mobile, and mentally comparable to a 5-year-old.
Footage taken by a neighbor appears to show Victor behind a fence with relatives calmly trying to retrieve a knife he wouldn’t let go of. When officers arrived, they allegedly drew their weapons and fired within 12 seconds. No visible attempt to deescalate. No nonlethal force.
Police were reportedly responding to a call misinterpreting Victor’s behavior. But a child’s life was nearly ended—because of a disability.
