His budget includes $27.8 billion for the Department of Agriculture, which would protect the environment with money allocated for the threat of wildfires and expanded infrastructure for safe drinking water.
He added $46.1 billion for the Department of Energy, an almost 10% increase, which will focus largely on clean energy investments. The budget also includes increased spending for the Environmental Protection Agency. President Trump cut the agency’s spending by 26%, Forbes reported.
The Department of Transportation’s allocation will focus on funding for rail and buses and the State Department’s funding includes a portion for leadership on climate change.
This investment across agencies signals a “whole-of-government approach to tackling Climate change.” Climate-related spending is an increase of $14 billion compared to the previous year’s budget.
The budget announcement comes days after Biden announced a significant infrastructure bill also aimed at combating Climate change. Paul Bledsoe, a former Clinton White House climate advisor now with the Progressive Policy Institute, told CNBC of the infrastructure proposal, “Electrifying America’s cars and trucks, creating a nationwide smart grid, expanding electricity storage to allow more renewable energy, establishing universal high speed internet — all of these are intended to boost the productivity and competitiveness of the economy, while also cutting emissions.”
