If you enjoy indulging in an extra glass of wine or a cocktail or two during the summer but dread hangovers and pounding headaches, this natural coconut water remedy is for you! Hangovers can cause dehydration, bloating, drowsiness, and nausea. Luckily, coconut water is tasty, refreshing, and has some amazing benefits. It is loaded with nutrients and minerals and will leave you feeling hydrated and replenished.
Coconut water is the juice found in the center of a young, green coconut, about 6–7 months of age, and it takes 10–12 months to fully mature. “Coconut water forms naturally in the fruit and contains 94 percent water and very little fat.” Not to be confused with coconut milk, which is a mixture of water and coconut meat. Only one cup (240 ml) of coconut contains 46 calories, as well as 17 percent of the RDI of potassium, 17 percent of the RDI of manganese, 15 percent of the RDI of magnesium, and 10 percent of the RDI of vitamin C. Not to mention that it’s naturally free of fat and cholesterol.
How Does Coconut Water Improve Hangovers?
To understand why coconut water is the ultimate hangover cure, we need to first talk about why hangovers occur, to begin with. A hangover is the body’s natural response as it metabolizes alcohol. Alcohol is a diuretic, which means that your kidneys are flushing more water out than they are taking in. This process dehydrates the body and causes you to have that dreaded migraine when you wake up after a night out. Alcohol also inhibits the hormone vasopressin1 2, which helps your kidneys reabsorb water and stops you from urinating.
This is where coconut water comes in handy. It is made up of 94 percent water on average and contains high concentrations of electrolytes, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Its electrolytes and potassium specifically help to quickly rehydrate the body, to help you feel brand new. “Electrolytes play a major role in cell functions, fluid regulation, tissue repair, energy creation, and most importantly, help your body retain fluids.” Although coconut water is not a magic cure, it is a much healthier option compared to sugary beverages, juices, and sodas and is the perfect addition to add to tonics and smoothies.
