Vegan activist Tash Peterson has made headlines once again after holding a protest at the Perth Royal Show, a cattle judging event that the activist says glamorizes animal abuse.

Tash Peterson uploaded the video to her Facebook page, showing her jumping into the show ring, wearing a T-shirt reading “End the animal holocaust” while shouting about the animal cruelty behind the practice. She told the crowd, “These gentle and innocent beings are going to be brutally murdered and shot in the head. They’re just as gentle and loving as beloved dogs and cats.”

Peterson is no stranger when it comes to hosting dramatic and sometimes questionable protests. She recently stormed a Louis Vuitton store covered in her own period blood to protest their use of animal skins.

She said, “Animal abuse events that run throughout the week-long event include horse jumping, camel riding, sheep shearing competitions, sheep ‘meat’ judging, cow ‘beef’ judging, dairy cow judging, ‘poultry’ exhibition, fishing demos, sheepdog yard trials, animal parading and enslaving baby animals separated from their mothers in a petting farm. Today Animal rights activists targeted the judging ring for ‘beef’ cattle where they are judged based on how good their muscle and flesh looks for human consumption. They are viewed as nothing but objects and commodities but are, in fact sentient individuals who are victims of this holocaust. We are here to speak up for them as they can not speak up for themselves.”

Some animal activists take issue with Peterson’s actions. Many have also called out Peterson’s use of the word “holocaust” to describe the cruelty that animals face in factory farming. They argue that the word is so heavily associated with the Holocaust during World War II and to apply it to any other event is offensive and does a disservice to both causes.

Do these kinds of protests really help? Or do they continue to paint an unappealing picture of vegans and what they stand for?
