When we heard about a group of rabbits that were being sent to slaughter after being used for medical testing by a university here in Spain, we put the wheels in motion to try and save them.
With a one-way ticket to the slaughterhouse, and just 48 hours to get them out of there, we knew we had to act quickly.
Mission: Save the Bunnies
Covered in puncture wounds, tumors, and missing large chunks of fur across their little white bodies, the rabbits were absolutely petrified.
They had spent their entire lives living in hell. Born and raised at a breeding facility, they were confined to tiny cramped wire mesh cages, and kept in the pitch black. When ready they were shipped off to whatever testing facility needed them, and in this case it was a university.
At the university, they remained isolated and alone in yet another cage, with every passing day bringing more pain and suffering as they were callously exploited.
With the help of our friends at Leon Vegano Animal Sanctuary the rabbits were rescued in the nick of time, and after a long drive through the night, they were finally back here with us at Mino Valley Farm Sanctuary.
Free At Last
Before arriving at the sanctuary, they had never felt the sun on their backs or the grass beneath their feet.
Watch the video below to see them experiencing freedom for the first time ever:
After they had settled into their new life at the sanctuary, we moved them into a much bigger area which they now share with the hens, sheep and our resident calf Luna.
What’s so great about their new home is that the land spans over a bank where the bunnies have built themselves a huge burrow which starts inside the sheep barn. Their burrow is their favorite place to spend time during the day before retreating into their house at night along with the hens.
Hope for a Cruelty-Free Future
Hundreds of thousands of animals are poisoned, blinded, and killed every year for animal testing, mostly for the cosmetics industry. These animals have chemicals and creams rubbed on to their delicate skin and eyes, and are locked into restraints that prevent them from moving. The worst part of all this torture is that animal testing for cosmetics is entirely unnecessary and largely ineffective. With all the known “safe” ingredients out there, there is no reason why companies should have to subject innocent creatures to life in a lab to prove something we already know.
These animals are not resources for us to use for our own personal gain. They are living, feeling, individuals who have their own purpose and place in the world, yet we continue to exploit them just because we can.
Inflicting pain and suffering on another living being is completely unjust and immoral. If you do not believe in animal exploitation then the only answer is strive for a cruelty-free lifestyle. By choosing cruelty-free, you are standing against this violence.
If you want to make a real difference to the lives of animals just like these precious bunnies that we saved from their living nightmare, then along with boycotting products from companies that use animals, make sure that you are actively educating those around you about the horror animals face for the sake of our beauty products.
These rabbits who are now living happy and free at our sanctuary are just a few out of millions who are suffering in labs every day. No living creature should ever have to suffer for the sake of our beauty. To learn more about how you can go cruelty-free, click here.
