Sheep are playful, friendly animals that can experience emotions and perform certain cognitive tasks.  Their experience of emotion actually has a lot of similarities to human’s. Plus, they are absolutely adorable creatures who almost always make you say “aww.” Unfortunately, these sweet little creatures are not treated with the love or respect that animals deserve. They suffer in factory farms, wool farms, animal testing labs, and various fairs and festivals. One of the ongoing controversies involving the inhumane treatment of sheep revolves around live animal export.

In 2019, nearly 15,000 sheep drowned on an over-crowded cargo ship from Romania to the Middle East. Just two years earlier, 2,400 sheep died due to heat stress on export from Australia to the Middle East. This voyage was under Emmanuel Exports, the largest sheep exporter in Australia. After multiple reports of them breaking Austalia’s live animal export laws, such as not providing enough food or water and not giving the animals medical treatment, Australia’s Department of Agriculture and Water Resources suspended Emmanuel Exports’ license. They also launched a formal investigation into the companies’ cruel practices. This response is thanks to footage on 60 Minutes provided by one of the ship’s workers. Appalled at the cruelty that the sheep were subjected, he decided to secretly film the conditions. A wave protests and outrage followed.

In May of 2018, the government established tougher penalties for companies that did not comply with the animal welfare measures, deciding against a total ban on live exports. The government recently placed on ban on live-exports during summer months, but subsequently approved a permit for an export of 56,000 sheep to the Middle East! These animals will suffer for days without access to food or water until they finally reach their destination – just to be slaughtered. Sign this petition to demand that the Department of Agriculture in Australia uphold the ban on live animal exports during the Northern Hemisphere’s summer months!
