How do you define motherhood? One of the most important jobs across the animal kingdom comes in many forms and pairings. When a mother adopts another baby as her own it’s special but when the baby isn’t even part of her species it’s extraordinary!
These interspecies relationships prove animals are more than just wild creatures meant to feed us, work for us or entertain us. Not only are these relationships touching, but they’re also incredibly adorable!
Below are seven of our favorite interspecies animal mom moments. From dogs adopting kittens and pigs to kittens adopting ducks and squirrels — all of these animal moms will make you smile!
Each relationship is unique and full of love. After seeing these moments you will have a pretty good idea of what motherhood is and that, quite simply, love is love.
Happy Mother’s day to all the mothers out there and all the animal moms, too!

These images are beautiful. Thank you, One Green Planet, for reminding us of the motherhood and loving parental relationships that exist within, and between, other animal species including our own. Happy Mothers Day to All Creatures.
