Lady Freethinker has exposed elephant cruelty at a popular resort in Bali, Indonesia. The cruelty at Mason Elephant Park has been captured on video and photos by the organization.

The footage shows elephants chained up, required to give rides, and chained with bullhooks, according to Lady FreeThinker. Mason Elephant Park has been visited by celebrities including Jessica Biel, Julia Roberts, David Beckham and Kim Kardashian.

Nina Jackel, Lady Freethinker founder said in an emailed statement, “The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us that holding wild animals captive is not only cruel, but puts all of us in danger. Elephants, like many of the wild animals in the live ‘wet’ food markets, where the coronavirus is believed to have started, carry salmonella, tuberculosis and even anthrax.”

Jackel noted that the park has been closed due to the coronavirus crisis, “When the park reopens, we are pleading with them to stop all rides and human-elephant contact, offering open space instead of where visitors can observe the animals in their natural environment, and giving them the freedom that they deserve.”

Investigators that visited the park found elephants struggling in chains to get a drink of water and a worker shoving a baby elephant over on its side in the water. The IUCN red list of threatened species places Asian Elephants as ” endangered” and “severely fragmented.” The estimated population stands between 2,500 and 4,000.
