In Jhargram, West Bengal, an adult female elephant died after being attacked by a mob with a flaming spear. The attack occurred on August 15, just hours after another elephant allegedly killed a local resident, intensifying the ongoing human-elephant conflict in the region.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate change (MoEFCC) has demanded a detailed report from the state’s Chief Wildlife Warden regarding the incident. Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the attack, as confirmed by the Chief Wildlife Warden.
The Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO) has called for an immediate inquiry into the event and urged the West Bengal government to reassess the methods used to manage human-elephant conflicts. They highlighted that such conflicts are a result of inadequate policies that fail to protect both human and animal interests, turning interactions into violent confrontations.
FIAPO criticized the involvement of “hulla parties,” groups tasked with driving away elephants using non-lethal methods. In this instance, however, they reportedly used flaming spears, leading to the tragic death of the elephant. A video circulating online shows the injured elephant in agony, with the spear still embedded in her back, sparking widespread outrage.
The incident has reignited concerns over the management of human-elephant conflicts in South Bengal, an area known for frequent encounters between humans and elephants. FIAPO pointed out that these conflicts often escalate due to the lack of trained personnel and standard operating procedures, despite guidelines issued by the Supreme Court in 2018.
The West Bengal Forest Department has denied that their staff or members of the hulla party were responsible for the attack, suggesting that the injury was inflicted by someone standing on a roof or tree. The department has vowed to bring the perpetrator to justice under the Wildlife Protection Act.
