Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts made steps to make March 20 “Meat on the Menu Day,” in Nebraska. This coincides with Colorado’s “MeatOut Day,” the nonbinding proclamation to encourage Coloradans to eat less meat. Ricketts noted that beef production is Nebraska’s biggest industry.

“That is a direct attack on our way of life here in Nebraska,” Ricketts, a Republican said.

Colorado’s proclamation shared, “A plant-based diet helps protect the environment by reducing our carbon footprint, preserving forests, grasslands, and wildlife habitats, and reduces Pollution of waterways.”

MeatOut Day” is a campaign started by the Farm Animal rights Movement in 1985 to encourage people to eat less meat.

Many facets of cows make them problematic for the environment. According to the Washington Post, if cows were a country of their own, they would be the third-largest emitters of greenhouse gases globally. The amount of farmland cows require is also quite extensive.

Eating less meat is imperative to making a difference in Climate change. Richard Waite at the World Resources Institute told the Washington Post, “But if we don’t reduce emissions from agriculture, we’re not going to be able to hit climate targets even if we get it exactly right on fossil fuels.”
