The market for plant-based products continues growing. And every once in a while, a company emerges with a new product that is especially exciting. This time it’s plant-based cheese.
Magi Richani, a trilingual, Lebanese entrepreneur with an engineering degree from U.C. Berkeley, is the founder of Nobell Foods. After discovering that “unique proteins [called caseins] found in cow’s milk make cheese cheese,” she realized that it is possible to genetically engineer soybeans to recreate these proteins. So she started Nobell Foods “to make the foods we love without the animals.”
Now, Nobell Foods has closed its Series B funding round and boasts over $100 million in funding. It’s backed by big names, too, like Footprint Coalition (Robert Downey Junior), Breakthrough Energy (a venture capital firm that Bill Gates established), Hillhouse Capital, and Andreessen Horowitz. Nobell expects its cheese will be available by late 2022 or early 2023.
