Novameat has created a plant-based steak that looks just like a whole cut of meat. The Spanish startup made the steak out of beetroot juice, peas and seaweed. The company uses a 3-D printing process to create the product.

Plant-based alternatives that mimic whole cuts of meat are notoriously tricky to master, according to CEO Giuseppe Scionti. Many plant-based alternatives, including the Impossible Burger, Impossible Pork and Beyond Meat, mimic ground meat as a base for products.

The Novameat steak has yet to be tested by consumers. According to the Guardian, Novameat plans to introduce the product to restaurants in Italy and Spain in 2020 and then scale up in 2021. The company creates the steak-like texture by using peas, seaweed and beetroot juice to create meat-like “fibers,” in the product. Novameat has received investment from a firm that has also invested in Beyond Meat, Memphis Meat and Most Meat.

Scionti told the Guardian of the new product, “I started with steak I think because it is the holy grail of plant-based meat. It is the most difficult.” He said of the importance of plant-based meats and the environment, “We believe it is important to provide an alternative. This will help in the long term to decrease the need for land, water, energy and, of course, reduce the emissions coming from animal agriculture.”
