The only time pigs raised in the meat industry get to see sunlight is when they are in the transport truck to the slaughterhouse, after spending their entire lives in a crate that never allowed them the opportunity to turn around. It’s a horrific existence, but one lucky pig will now know love and kindness after falling out of a transport truck at just a couple weeks old!

When Francesca McAndrews was driving to work during rush hour traffic in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, she saw a tiny six-pound two or three-week old piglet dashing in and out of the heavy traffic. McAndrews immediately slammed on her brakes, leaving her car to block traffic and successfully caught the pig. “I thought it was a dog at first. I chased her around a bit, and I finally caught her,” McAndrews told Lancaster Online.

It is more than likely the little one, who is now named Enzo, fell off of a transport truck. Veterinarians who examined her found she had a hernia, likely sustained in the fall. If the hernia gets any bigger it could rupture, so McAndrews is determined to help the pig.

Heartwarmingly, local businesses are holding fundraisers to help cover the costs of the pig’s growing medical bills, including a “Swine and Wine” and a “Crepes with Enzo” event. The surgery will cost at least $600, possibly more, depending on Enzo’s anesthesia and recovery needs.

There is also a GoFundMe page set up to help cover the cost of Enzo’s veterinary bills, which amazingly already has raised $1,425 out of the $2,000 goal.

Once the surgery is over, Enzo will live outside of McAndrews’ rural home. Right now, little Enzo is being fostered by a local animal lover, Lorrie Dunn, who has several pigs of her own. McAndrews would like to use Enzo as a “startup mascot” for an animal-driven Support service for women who’ve suffered trauma. We are thrilled this young pig is receiving the care she needs.

Pigs often get a bad reputation as being dirty, stupid animals but in reality, they are incredibly intelligent and emotional beings. Scientists have determined that not only are pigs smart, but they are smarter than dogs, some primates, and three-year-old children. They are ranked as the fourth most intelligent creature on earth!

Enzo may have had a rough start in life, but it sounds like this piglet will have a bright future ahead of her, thanks to McAndrews’ big heart!

  1. It makes people feel better if they use various animals as ways to insult others. They can fell superior even though it is they who are causing the problems. I;d take Enzo over people any day.
