Cat cafés have sometimes been dismissed as gimmicky spots for selfies and lattes. But when done right—with animal welfare at the core—they can be a lifeline for rescue cats. One shining example is Cats & Crystals, a brand-new cat café in Oceanside, California, that proves these places can do real good.

Founded by Britney Ortiz and featured on FOX 5/KUSI, Cats & Crystals is more than a café—it’s a tribute to Ortiz’s late mother, a passionate animal advocate. The space is a dreamy forest-inspired lounge where guests can meet adoptable cats in a low-stress setting, surrounded by butterfly chairs, mushroom tables, and tree-shaped towers. Every feline is available for adoption through a partnership with Today Tomorrow Forever Animal Rescue, and every reservation helps Support their care.

Visitors must book ahead—50 minutes for $25—which ensures the cats aren’t overwhelmed and can interact (or not) on their own terms. It’s a thoughtful setup designed with the animals’ wellbeing in mind. There’s even a gift shop filled with crystal jewelry and cat-themed goodies, but the real heart of the business is its mission: helping cats find loving homes.

Across the Atlantic, however, not everyone’s convinced. In the UK, both the RSPCA and Cats Protection have called for an end to cat cafés, citing concerns about welfare. But places like Cats & Crystals show that when cafés put rescue first—offering space, choice, and proper oversight—they can provide enrichment, visibility, and, most importantly, second chances.

Cat cafés can be amazing—but only when they’re run ethically, don’t operate for profit, and truly prioritise the needs of the animals. Done right, they’re a win for everyone. If you care about animal welfare, Support rescue-first cat cafés like Cats & Crystals. And always choose adoption over buying pets—lives literally depend on it.
