Oksana Krasnova and her husband have been fighting, but Krasnova uses her wages to pay for food and supplies to nurse the animals she rescues back to health. She even arranged transportation for them on military vehicles to Kyiv, where they can be rehomed. Krasnova and her husband, Stanislav Krasnov, have rescued nearly 30 pets that they have discovered when passing through abandoned cities.
The animal lover told the PA news agency, “I love animals a lot and I used to help rescue animals with my husband even before the Russian invasion.”
“I come across a lot of abandoned pets when I am going about my duties and I can’t just leave them.”
“It’s hard to evacuate animals from the frontline but these poor pets have been used to living with humans so they can’t survive on their own.”
“I have my own pets who are being looked after by my parents in Kyiv and I could never dream of abandoning them.”
Her most memorable rescue was the very first animal that she found. She recalled a time when she and her husband heard “some strange sounds” while walking through an abandoned home. They found a small black dog who had been alone and trapped in the building. The poor animal was alone, starving, and had only survived off raw potatoes that were still in the home. Krasnova estimates that she was there for about a month before they found her.
“She was just lying on the floor and we placed a pillow under her head while she was barking and crying and foaming at the mouth.”
“We had to push her into a box and transport her in our military vehicle.”
“She was having seizures and we didn’t think she would survive.”
Krasnova worked to care for her and feed her every hour until finally, her health began to improve. The little black dog is now living with a foster family. Although she mainly has rescued dogs and cats, the couple has found other animals like birds and rabbits. They are also looking over a herd of pigs, and although they can’t rescue all of them, they check on them and make sure they have enough food.
Amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it’s been reported that more than one million people have now fled, many with their beloved pets in their arms. The unpredictability of the devastating war has forced many Ukrainians to make tough choices about what to take with them. Many don’t know when and if they will be able to return home. There have been many donations of money and food to these shelters, and animal shelters and zoos are slowly making their way to borders to seek safety, but situations aren’t easy.
