Journey Ramsey is an amazing generous person who was delivering food and clothes to homeless people in Maine when she had another idea for how to help more people. She saw a homeless woman living in her car with her dog give a dog coat to another homeless man whose dog was shivering. That’s when she realized homeless people with dogs need help caring for their pets as much as they need help for themselves.
Ramsey told WGME, “This woman was one of the first people I had helped. She was homeless and living in her car because she had two dogs and would not abandon them to go live in a shelter and here she was giving what little she had to another pet in need.”
The bond between a human and a dog can be unbreakable and for many homeless people, their dogs might be what get them through life as some homeless people told the Street Vet.
Well, Ramsey started the amazing program called Backpacks for Homeless Dogs. The program collects donations and fills backpacks with “pet food, treats, coats, leashes, collars,” and more to give to homeless people who have dogs. So far, they’ve donated about 200 backpacks!
They also help homeless people who have cats, not just dogs.
As Ramsey told WGME: “These pets are their best friends, their protectors and often the only ‘person’ they can talk to. Having a pet is very important.” Both the homeless people and their pets deserve love and compassion, so it’s wonderful that a program is helping them and their companions so that they can stay together and have the necessities they need.
Donations for Backpacks for Homeless Dogs can be sent via the Maine Homeless Veterans Alliance website.
